This initiative reaches out to substance abusers who have, or are at risk for, HIV/AIDS. The emphasis is on strengthening overall patient and family function while preventing and treating the disease. Moreover, our approach addresses those connections between HIV/AIDS and other biopsychosocial factors which are critical not only to understanding the person’s health status, but also to engaging and keeping the patient in effective treatment. HIV counseling and testing are provided in a supportive and educational context, and strict confidentiality of all HIV and other treatment information is maintained.

While an infectious disease physician provides comprehensive HIV treatment and medication management, the program is also designed to provide a broad array of other services. Family members and significant others are encouraged to participate in care whenever this is appropriate. Along with HIV care, patients and their families are eligible to receive: primary care medical services, individual and group counseling, addiction services (either outpatient drug free or methadone treatment), parenting and family counseling, psychiatric assessments, and case management -- all at the same location. Center staff also work with families to strengthen their relationships with organizations such as schools, employers, courts and landlords.
